Check out Atomic Frontier! - start with the video on a country-sized telescope or the world's deepest scuba dive • Turns out that trying to precisely detect fire from space is more difficult than "point a camera at it".

    1. Atomic Frontier

Making this documentary was a blast, although to be honest with you, halfway up the tree I was definitely having second thoughts about being able to make it to the top. Thanks, Tom, for this amazing opportunity!

      1. NewAgeTJ

So stoked for you James, always been such a legend and an extremely talented and diligent individual \m/ Rock on dude, killing it TJ

@l1tn1ng b0t 85 Hey, If you ask me what time it was when you said that. I would say "Now silly head!" You know if you asked me that same question at this moment. I would still say... And when you read this "It's Aways Now! Silly Head. Lov'n ya.

    3. Daedalus Young

So you're telling me that the 45 m HR drop tower was really built as a fire lookout tower?

    4. Tippex

Tom Scott: who are you? Atomic frontier: I’m you... but younger.

    5. Jamie Hughes

Are you planning to present Country File next ?

    6. Captain Chair

At least someone is doing something to prevent bush fires. It must have been snuck under the government's nose.

    7. anomie nous

Tom would be really cool to have as a boss.

    8. Some Dude

Imagine Tom and I did a thing made a video collector

    9. Gazpacho Tabletop

The script was really interesting, but not the delivery I'm afraid

    10. Hoovy Simulator 2

Damn, I somehow thought that the title was talking about bushfires being used to hunt down satellites.

    11. Stigs Ukrainian Cousin

      Put these in brazil

Yep, the kids gonna have yer job.

I’m not from Australia but I have lookout points in my area that are still in use.

    15. Girliest Mammy

    16. donnieh dea

This is an interesting doco but I don’t remember fire tracking be that much of a problem problem with 2020 bushfires, problem was limited staff and budget needed for fire control, less back-burning done before Fire season, water miss management and the ever worsening climate

    17. donnieh dea

      Kangaroos are killers beware them

    18. liam parsons

Remember that number people. Over 1Billion. 1,000,000,000 animals died. We will never get those numbers back... never

    19. Extended Mag

This intro was almost the exact same as the previous video

    20. Rezky Donny Putranto

He's definitely gonna overtake Tom's job

    25. Joy Reacts

      What a brilliant video 😁

At the end and beginning of every year there is a inferno at your doorstep in Australia but this year there is no fire God is up to something

    27. uh oh stinky

hey guess what Tom Scott “We flew a kite in a public place.”

    28. Akhil Naseem

Had the pleasure to study with James in my second year engineering units two years ago. We were working in the same group trying to do something I don't remember what anymore. Very happy to see him in this space.

    33. Baloo The Bear

I really like this video, I really do, but something hit me when I realized that his voice was consistently going up and down sentence by sentence and I'm not sure where that's called but it made it really hard for me to pay attention ._. I'm not trying to be rude

    34. Zenn22

stop uploading at 20fps you pleb

    36. ARTiculations

I approve of people who make videos with Tom Scott about fires. 😉🔥

    37. Messerschmitt Bf-109

Imagine if there was a fire under a look out tree

    38. G Sai Anirudh

Are these cubesats in use currently? If yes, why didn't they detect the bush fires this year?

    39. UnitSe7en

Okay, sure, you're away from the roos, but you realise you're entering the very lair of the drop bear, right?

    40. Floydy

Funny when us in australia are on fire again.

    41. Nico

      Positively fascinating

    42. Deciduous 77

Best video I have possibly ever seen

    43. Colin Demmons

What are you gonna do if the tree burns down?

    46. Matthew Harvey

      West Aussie Respresent! :)

    47. 21stCentury Ozman

James: Congratulations on such a well-made and *clearly enunciated* video. Good to see and hear a fellow Aussie who doesn't mumble! Keep it up!

    48. K John

Great work from whoever this dude is.

    49. Bright Space

      make sure to install optifine.

    50. doggonimous doggo

I still think you know all the fnaf history and doesnt want to tell us

    51. YRO

The part that really got to me was "low cost satelites". The single fact that those words can be put together is a testament on how far we've come since the 50's.

    52. Sir Steven Harvey III

What if the fire starts coming up the tree

      1. MISSION101

Well if the fire is close enough for it to be burning your tree, then you’re an idiot for still being up there

    53. I’m to tired to think of a good name right now

Tom we’re waiting for appalling puns #6.

    54. King

Why do you look like Forrest Gump at the beginning of this video bruh

    55. reinl7

My jaw is on the floor from the quality of this video.

    56. Matt Donnelly

these could be covered by the use of drone and helicopters why would any one fork out billions of dollars when I could use the money buying more aircraft and fire appliances doesn't really make a whole load of sense e.g I can a 747 aircraft for 26.3 million that's puts fires out, people need to start thinking about putting out fires as fast as possible.

      1. Matt Donnelly

@Oi Meu Chapa ok so people ring 000 and you report a fire. That's how the system works we have planes already fly every day we have 9 plane that fly different areas already in Perth everything is tracked, through people on the ground and helicopter in the sky, all the water bombers do is suppress the fire for ground crews to put the fire out, so why do we need satellites when we could buy more fire fightering equipment to put the fire out

      2. Oi Meu Chapa

But how would you know where the fire is located at, you need to put the fire out before it spreads

    57. eDoc2020

If I ever move to Australia, remind me to mount a huge array of red LEDs on the roof and flash them at 12Hz.

    58. That One Guy Who Didn't Watch Fate

or get a shaman and make it rain

    59. That One Guy Who Didn't Watch Fate

      So Australian btw...

    60. DaFluffyOwl

100's of million dollar documentaries aren't as good as this one

    61. Timmy Cho

The moment you realize your a high school nerd when you understand everything he's saying

    62. Lilly like da flower

I could never climb that tree, imagine if you slipped through the bars 😬

    63. Dumb bitch Club

The way that I remember fighting those fires in my own backyard, and then being able to see such high quality imagery of what everyone else would have seen at the time. It was just smoke, and there was no power, so we had absolutely no idea how much had burnt or how close the fires were unless they were at you back door. I mean Wow, that’s some great quality footage, like better than the photos I could take because I couldn’t even see 2 meters infront of me Lmao

    64. TruNeighborhoodWatch TNW

7:00 why isn't that *fire lookout tower* rigged with PTZ cameras? I mean that was on "The new inventors" over ten years ago now.

    65. BigJMC9

      Aussie Aussie Aussie!

    66. Jon Fuller Web Design

This was a fantastic, informative video. Really enjoyed learning and listening

    67. carlos tha rippa

job replace? i sub for ur personality and for you. not for anyone else. when you leave so do i

    68. James Anthony

0:59 The bars over his head, are those handholds for going back down?

    69. Michelle Zable

We're likely to get a lot of false positives from things that are red, but not on fire. Best line of the century.

    70. Critical Maz

Ooh, I've climbed that tree too! Very cool.

    71. Bill Zusner

Everyone holds hand next to face.

    72. Mike Hunt

*I did a thing* made Aurora borealis in his kitchen and it was similar to what you did

    73. Quinn Sellami

British youtubers: The NHS needs a lot of help these days. Me an american: isn't that the thing the smart high school kids got in.

      1. eDoc2020

Me, an American who has been to a town starting with N: The whole high school is NHS, and that NHS has its own NHS.

    74. yan-Deriction

Neil Degrasse Tyson fistfighting this guy over who gets to say keep looking up

    75. Kraum Lanko

Wow this was actually quite amazing.

    76. Lord Motorsports

      Impressive quality A+++

    77. Paul James

A very good video not from Tom this time but just as interesting

    78. Gunslinger

Never knew bushfire can hunt satellites too

    79. ezra limm

who else just held their hand to their face?

    80. Intemperiae

In regard to your last sentence: Could it be a guest presenter talking about deepfakes with your face on top?

    81. Francesco Griffo

      Wait I thought you died

    82. Bassem B.

His speech is a little too sing-songy, which I realise is the convention for reports but seems a little overdone. I much prefer Tom's more conversational tone. That said, this was excellently produced video and I'm definitely subscribing to his channel.

    83. Mason B

Instead of just checking for a red channel as well as flickering artifacts, could you use infrared imaging? Although I assume the issues related with that would include increase in costs and the cold of space masking off any radiated heat that small.

    84. zapfanzapfan

That Japanese satellite imagery was just mesmerizing!

    85. Happy Be

started a uni module on remote sensing this Monday, great timing 😁

    86. TD B

The host has the very typical WA accent. It sounds like a curious mix of SE England and general Australian. I have the same accent. It's because Perth and WA has the highest rate of British migrants, and so many of us here have dual nationality because our mum or dad (or both) are from the UK.

    87. PayneDeathz

Woah this is some serious production quality on this one

    88. Mike Shane

me, But also not me , Is this related to new Vsause video Illusions of Time.

    89. Henrique de Almeida

I wasn’t expecting to be amazed from beginning to end. This was perfect

    90. Nothingz

So its like curing symptoms instead of the problem causing them... How many people will have to go and stop fires? Stop warming the earth instead? ...Nah?

    91. Stephanie Ho

That intro had serious Firewatch vibes and I'm all for it.

    92. Terminal Entity

I wish more Aussies knew more about fire and its necessity in the landscape rather than being paranoid and frightened of the very thought of it. Such a stupid time we live in...

    93. Jordan L.

"Red, but also, not on fire." Is such a great line.

    94. Austin Dunlop

      Awesome video

    95. hotelmario510

Instant subscribe. This dude is fantastic.

    96. Dylan .T

Fascinating video thanks for the upload

    97. Adam Fakes

Watch out Tom you have some competition

    98. lucas andrews

Ok but what happens when the fire gets a gun??

    99. ErraticPT

Cube satellites are by far the worst idea ever. Instead of putting more junk that later generations either have to dodge or cleanup into orbit if they don't burn up as planned, why don't they simply put decent IR cameras on the towers and get the same sort of coverage for less?

      1. Oi Meu Chapa

Your comment makes absolutely no sense, its way cheaper to have like 4 cubesats with good ir sensors, then a couple hundred IR cameras on trees with limited coverage, the indians and the chad ISRO have gotten launch costs so low that its way cheaper, and no they wont be junk in orbit, cube sats deorbit quite quickly because of their low orbits, and even then NASA developed a steam propulsion system for cubesats, federal university of santa catarina in brazil is developing a ethanol micro thruster for cubesats, they will very soon replace most satelites.

    100. CyberGhost42

So next week is a Deepfake video?
