Would You Swim In Power Plant Wastewater?
Normally, the answer would be no. But in these very limited circumstances, at Iceland's Blue Lagoon, you can swim in geothermal power plant wastewater, and it's even healthy: although the marketing material doesn't usually mention it. Here's a story about geothermal energy, cheap heat, and how to keep some ducks warm.

One thing I couldn't fit into my script: the pipeline expands by around several metres along its length when it's in use, because of the hot water running through it. The big boxes along the way are expansion joints and supports to allow it to move! As ever, all my sources are in the description.
Odd to me the resources and investments in moving the geothermal over those distances while in many cases straight down avoids the the eye soar.
Need to go there at least once.
Say hello for cancer
OLD
One thing you didn't get right Tom, heated cold water is mainly a thing in Reykjanes (Keflavík, Njarðvík, Grindavík, Sandgerði, Hafnir, Garður, Vogar) - not elsewhere in Iceland. Elsewhere, the warm water is actually real geothermal water - including whatever impurities the borehole may pump up. The reason is the borehole water in Reykjanes is mainly superheated underground seawater. Elsewhere the borehole water is heated groundwater. In Reykjanes, the groundwater floats like a bead on top of the seawater.
eh why not
The good coach thirdly bat because stop preclinically fetch than a organic duck. adventurous, petite poultry
Anyone finding it weird that Tom nowadays looks younger than in his 10yr old videos?
Yes but only once
Average tom scott video
Good god this is the strongest clickbait I've seen this year
Hmmm let's find out
Look im fine ! swiming in this water, and I am only 15 years old ! no big deal
Who are those people over to the right having a good time and the ones right next to you before you put the recording on yourself? Aren't you going to film yourself swimming for at least a minute? Not even snorkel gopro! Jeesh, no one wants to hear you talk.
yes
Yes.
False advertising. Thumbnail showed the dude in the water 👎
I live near Rancho Seco, so yes I would. And I have. Many times. (though it’s no longer operating so)
Clickbait Thumbs down
There is a coal fire PowerPoint waste water near me that is safe for use and warm all year round, Victoria Australia
Tom why are glowing green?
Ironic. You missed the eruption by a few months.
are you related to travis scott by any chance?
This is gonna be on ur recommended
Yep
Clicked to see someone swim in wastewater Stayed for a lesson on geothermal power plants
I have bathed there once.
למה שאעשה זאת
In NZ we put the wast water back down the hole so we can reuse it
I use to surf in Cape Town right next to the nuclear power station because the sea was much warmer.
Who else has ever swam in the cooling lake near the nuclear power plant in Tennessee? I've swam in that water, they always said it was safe though.
Well you're already an infertile Soy Boy so what does it matter, right?
I've worked on a nuclear ship, in the engine room. We were trained on the radiation levels around us. The water that is used for cooling has a higher rad level than the other waters like drinking and potable. I wouldn't swim in it
Plant trees it looks like desert.
Hmm - why not? Even the wastewater of a Nuclear Plant has no direct contact (to radiation)... So if it isn't at boiling point - sure.
Didn't even get through the pre-roll ad and my answer is yes.
yeas! i would like to have a lethal virus or some nanobots crawling around my body! OH of course 3 eyes, WOW and of course i would like to be a rejected member of the society
This guy looks 20 and 45 at the same time. I'm not sure how
Geo thermal waste water is like any waste water the name waste... ring`s a bell ?if it was so good ppl wold drink it
ok
I like how people have heard so much anti-power propaganda that you have to prepare for their visceral reaction towards water that has ever been used for anything, ever. They don't know how water is recycled.
Please for the love of God change the thumbnail
Funny isn't it, how the direction of your content is no longer yours in any fashion, neither directionally or content-wise. The slow degradation of unique and original creative content comes simultaneously with an false sense of urgency to appease algorithms and keep the cash flowing. Bend over, your soul is being shared by the world.
next powerplant swim? tsjernobyl?😉
Why doesn’t Nevada have this? Nevada is geologically active and nobody is doing anything about it
I’ve decided any video that teases something in the thumbnail that doesn’t show in the video gets my dislike unfortunately this is one of those
Wow 30€ for some water that takes water bills to a new price
Sees thumbnail: Maybe
Would You Touch Ice-nine? Just for the views?
Iceland has almost unlimited and cheap energy... Now if they could export that energy they’d be the next oil and gas rich nations...
PtX is the answer!
I would
Looks like slurpy swamp
no i would not i get ear infections easily
How is it waste?
As long as I'm SAFE from RONA, I'm all in
Crazy place yo
I love that you never ask for subscribers or likes. Your videos are always fascinating, I very much enjoy them. Much respect from Australia!
as a 10 year old me, my sisters and out friends would swim in the lovely warm waters that flowed past Ratcliffe on Soar and Kingston on Soar, a few hundred meters from the Ratcliffe power station, no health problems as yet 40 years on, but I can see through walls and I glow in the dark a bit.
reckjavick
That's really cool.
Content.
Not sure if there are any other Victorians here, but the Hazlewood pondage was a popular place for water sports year round.
Bloody ell mate
I can't tell if he's 19 or 53
From what I've heard, spent fuel waste pools for nuclear plants are actually fairly safe to swim in, and will be actually "cleaner" from radiation than the surrounding room.
i would not tom, yourself?
In this video, I especially can't tell whether you're 20 or 50.
Nice clickbait
I used the water to warm up the water
Silica can be taken orally... some can be good for regeneration after 50
Thumbnail looks like dude went in water and his human camouflage came off
Too much blabla
Depends
I set up a salt-water aquarium and general maintenance cleared up my dermatitis. You don't need the waste-water.
Tbh im Icelandic and i thought that this was done everywhere
“If I don’t jump in the radioactive waste how will I ever get super powers”
tfw you are swimming in the icelandic power plant wastewater and the sky starts raining time
you managed to look like 80 in your mid 30s
Yes, if it's geothermal power plant. Unless that water becomes acidic and melts my skin off.
That water looks so refreshing for some reason
Blue Lagoon... Blue... Lagoon.... No way
dang, Iceland really is just a taste of heaven isn't it
no
I've actually been here, would certainly recommend

I'll either be Heisenberg, or an X-Men, either way is a win
Everyone gangsta until Blue Lagoon starts turning people into autotargeting zombies
this guy talking soothes my anxiety.
I went there on a school trip, it even has a swim up bar though it’s super expensive
took me the whole video to realize it was clickbait, well played
I swam there once and after watching this video I was able to count at least 7 inaccuracies on one hand.

God be like. HEY YOU SEE THAT LARGE GREEN ISLAND Yea let’s call it Iceland. HEY YOU SEE THE SMALL ICY ISLAND RIGHT BESIDE IT Yea let’s call it Greenland. Logical right?
no i dont think i would do that
I'd swim in nuclear power plant wastewater. I would just really like more nuclear, before humanity destroy the planet :(
iceland is when i think happens to your towns when you have too much of a resource in catan lmao
